Demons are a race of humanoids who make up the majority of inhabitants in The Inpherno. They are characterized by horns on their head, and possessing the innate ability to wield a gear from birth.
Biology
Demons do not have biological sex or reproductive organs, and instead are born from a Spawn. Normally, demons are born at random without parents from a respective spawn, but two demons can sacrifice their gear in order to produce a biological child. All demons are born with a gear, which informs their abilities and basic biology. There is no rhyme or reason to what gear a demon is spawned with, even when spawned by their parents.[1] Demons can possess the same gear as another individual, and will share abilities, but will differ in personality. The Spawn a demon is born from does not normally impact their biology, but demons tend to have a social allegiance to the faction their Spawn resides in.
Demons are completely hairless, but demons with animal-based gears can possess animal traits, such as tails. Demons do not need to eat or sleep to function, but have the ability to feel sluggish and tired if they do not tend to their needs. Demons bleed red blood, and are highly susceptible to violence from one another, leading to a high mortality rate in young demons. Due to this, it is considered unusual for demons to age past middle age, with particular demons such as Zuka being treated as abnormally old. They are capable of getting sick and need to be tended to the same as any other organic being.
Horns are crucial to demons, as if they were to be fully removed, it would kill the demon they were attached to. They are made of keratin, and can otherwise be damaged, but will stop re-growing as an individual grows older. Demons have a tendency to file, carve, pierce, paint and dye their horns in a variety of styles and colour - this may be for aesthetic reasons, or for comfort, as demon horns are relatively heavy. Most demons are born with two horns, but they can have more, typically in pairs. Horn mutations can occur, but they are not common.
Demons can possess a variety of different skin tones across the color spectrum, though the most common are shades of gray. They can also have vitiligo.
Sociology
Demons are a relatively violent race - their population is split up into four major factions which are constantly at war with eachother, and which occupy their own regions, tied together by Crossroads in the middle. Almost all demons are born into their specific faction, and it is frowned upon to change factions later on. Demons participate in a ritual sport known as Phighting, which can oftentimes lead to major injury or death. The gear a demon is spawned with informs their general path in life, such as in the case of demons with healing gears, who are oftentimes forced to be healers, whether they wish to be or not. Despite this, demons often pursue relatively normal lives and may work jobs, own businesses, or follow other occupations - such as Slingshot, who owns his own cafe. Demons do not need to follow the fashion trends of their faction, but some, such as Blackrock's Subspace and the members of The Church of the TRUE EYE may follow specific fashion or uniforms.
Due to lacking biological sex, demons do not particularly observe gender or pronouns. It is uncommon, though not impossible, for a demon to prefer any specific pronouns over one another. Demons are all inherently agender, though are able to present themselves in multiple different ways.
Demons can easily form friendships, and often assert other demons as their family despite no biological relations, but they are averse to romantic relationships, due to the sacrificial nature of spawning a child. Despite this, they are able to get married and subsequently get a divorce. Biological siblings are extremely rare, and only occur due to unknown circumstances, such as in the case of Vine Staff and Shuriken.
Demons are known to observe and potentially worship deities, including the Swords. They have the ability to form religions and even religious cults, such as in the case of The Church. This level of religious zealotism is generally frowned upon by other demons, however. Individual factions may have their own lines of defense or justice systems, but Ban Hammer is tasked with keeping the peace throughout the whole of The Inpherno. Demons who are sufficiently wanted or have committed enough crimes will become a target for Ban Hammer, and will be locked up in Banland if they are caught, regardless of their faction.
The Swords
The Swords, oftentimes referred to as The SFOTH, are a group of deities within The Inpherno who are based on the sword gears from Sword Fight on the Heights IV. They are considered a subtype of demons, but differ in some key features. They have immortal or indefinite lifespans, bleed ichor, and are able to spawn children without sacrificing their gear. They also possess wings, and their immediate descendants can possess demigodly abilities and features.
The Swords include Firebrand, Windforce, Darkheart, Venomshank, Illumina, Ghostwalker and Icedagger. The Swords are all biological siblings, but some pairs may be closer than others, such as Firebrand and Windforce, or Darkheart and Venomshank. They all possess their own unique abilities and outlook on mortals, with some such as Firebrand being benevolent towards regular demons. The Swords are extremely powerful and at times dangerous, but have about equal physical strength to one another. Ban Hammer, Valk, Dom and Sword are all blood related to The Swords, and may possess their own unique abilities as a result.
During gameplay, The Swords appear during Sword events where they unleash their unique abilities onto the playing field, affecting the tides of a Phight.
