In the past before the game takes place, Subspace and Medkit used to work together in Blackrock as scientists studying the crystals dug up in the region. The uses of crystals has multiple applications. In Subspace's case, he wanted to use it counter to Medkit wanting to use it for good resulting in an incident in which Subspace rips out Medkit's eye and Medkit retaliates by inflicting even worse damage in self-defense. The cause of his rot is currently unknown. Medkit escapes Blackrock and Subspace has sworn to kill Medkit ever since.
He then goes on to becoming the head of the robotics division and creates the first Biograft, refining the design to the current Zetagraft and Betagraft design. The former being used more generally while the latter is the tankier subset. They are powered with the self-same crystals he researched. He's also modified his gear with the crystals to the poisonous traps in-game with his Phinisher being his self-stated greatest invention. He tests his inventions on living demon subjects.
