OVERTIME?!

From PHIGHTING! Wiki

This page is about the original PHIGHTING! track. For the in-game mechanic, see Overtime.

"OVERTIME?!" is a track composed by Key After Key. In-game, the track is played as the default Overtime theme.

Description

This is the first Key After Key track in the PHIGHTING! OST; it begins with repeating church bells and low guitar strums that increase in volume and intensity. Before the drop, a drum fill plays with an accompanying voice that says "OVERTIME?!" The song erupts into fast-paced chaos, with a keytar melody on top, deep guitar strums, and hardcore drums. Around the one minute mark, the climax hits, with complex chords and fast arpeggios.

The chaos and cluttered nature of this track represents the chaos and panic of trying to get the last kill of the game. The climax serves as a reward for anyone who manages to last this long in Overtime, as most games, especially before the update, never lasted longer than 15 seconds.

After the climax, the track loops from post-intro onwards. The original intention was to have the track loop indefinitely, however as Overtime almost never lasts over a minute, the single repeat version was officially implemented instead.

Trivia

  • For April Fools' 2024, a variant of "OVERTIME?!" was temporarily added, named "NEVERTIME".
    • In this variant, the beginning build-up constantly repeats.
  • The "OVERTIME?!" scream is sampled from Episode 49b, Season 3 of Spongebob Squarepants: "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve".
  • Key After Key, being a Biograft main, was influenced by the fear of staying alive during Overtime while making this track.[1]
  • This is the first original track that did not replace an existing song; Overtime was completely silent.
  • Due to the mass support of "OVERTIME?!" on its release, Key After Key created the extended version that is used in-game.
  • The last note of "PANDEMONIUM CODA" and the first note of "OVERTIME?!" share the same note name. (C#)
  • The beginning of OVERTIME?!'s melody is loosely based on that of "PANDEMONIUM CODA".
  • The keytar is "Synth 5" in the Sytrus VST.
  • The church bells are from the Touhou soundfont.
    • These bells are commonly associated with music from the Terraria Calamity mod, composed by DM DOKURO.
  • The drum breaks present throughout the song are Amen breaks.
