Shuriken is a ranged Phighter. He was released on 15 April 2023 during v0.5.0.
Overview
Shuriken is a ranged Phighter that plays as a flanker in his category. He boasts high mobility, and high DPS, but with a weaker bulk. He performs well at a medium range but is limited in close-quarter combat. Even then, Shuriken's Traverse the Horizon and Illusions of the Smoke allow him to get out of sticky situations that he gets into. His Phinisher Guillotine Blossom is an AOE/Ranged attack that allows him to crowd control and deal massive damage.

Shuriken is very good at being a distraction and capitalizing on people being distracted. Shuriken's large amount of mobility tools make the exceptional at getting to the places where they're most effective and getting out of them the moment something goes wrong. From behind, a good Shuriken has exceptional single target damage and has a fairly easy time either cleaning up low health enemies or helping to take down the higher health ones with antiheal. Both Stars of the Storm and Stab of the Betrayer apply antiheal, with good damage to boot.
Shuriken is without a doubt, very frail, with very little options at close range. While most of his hp is made up of shields, and he'll usually be taking a few breaks to regenerate the buffs from As Fast as the Wind, it doesn't change how vulnerable he is at his very worst. If you're low on hp, get some healing before you go in, regardless of whether you think you could live.
As stated before, Shuriken is very weak at close range due to being easily caught and decimated by melee characters, and ineffective at long range due to not being able to take advantage of most of Shuriken's abilities. This requires Shuriken to inhabit a middle ground in which they can deal damage the most effectively they can while additionally giving them more opportunities to escape if they're in a potentially dangerous situation.
At this medium range, picking which target to fight matters very little. Shuriken can repeatedly apply antiheal to one person, making them great for you to clean up, but Shuriken's high damage from behind can make killing healers just as viable a strategy. Granted, if someone is already taking down the support, it's always more helpful to tackle whoever they could heal before they go down.
Shuriken's role of capitalizing on the distractions of your team can basically swap, as Shuriken's distraction capabilities can far exceed their team's. Illusions of the Smoke is a great example of this, as the clone is great at directing enemy fire the opposite direction it should be, leading in one less player in the fight for a bit, or an exposed backside for you to shoot. And if they choose not to care for the clone, teleport right to it and teach them a lesson.
Aside from abilities, Shuriken's distraction capabilities come from what he is as a character. Shuriken can:
- Constantly stay behind their enemies,
- Prevent healing,
- Deal high damage,
- And slow you down.
Combining debuffs, high damage, and the power of forcing you to turn away from the main fight to avoid death makes Shuriken an excellent distraction. While a fight with anyone who's aware of your presence is usually where Shuriken is the least effective, drawing someone away from the objective for a bit can seriously help your team, even if you might take serious damage or die doing it.
Ability usage
- As Fast as the Wind
- If all haste and bounce is lost while in a fight back off to regen.
- Stars of the Storm
- Use this ability to kill off low health enemies instead of Stab of the Betrayer to make the most out of it's debuffs and extra damage at a later time.
- Stab of the Betrayer
- Starting an encounter with this is great to help ensure a kill.
- If you're low on health, quickly backstabbing someone can help support your team while you run away to regen.
- Traverse the Horizon
- While using Shuriken’s grapple you can press spacebar to end the grapple early and will launch you with your current momentum.
- If you have your phinisher you can grapple cancel to slightly move Shuriken forward during the animation
- If you grapple an edge of an platform you can quickly grapple cancel to use the momentum to launch you high enough to land on the platform.
- At the start of the rounds it's better to not use this ability as it can help get you out of tough situations at the start of the match.
- Illusions of the Smoke
- Luring people away from others to make them an easier target to teleport to and kill is something the clone executes very well.
- Teleporting to a clone with Guilliotine Blossom active can be a devastating surprise attack if the enemy is unaware of it's activation, although the windup of Illusions of the Smoke can decrease the effectiveness of this strategy by forcing you to lose some larger orbiting shurikens.
