Sword is a melee Phighter. He was released on 19 February 2022 with Playtest 1.

Overview

Sword is a melee Phighter who serves as a 'jack of all trades' within his class. He boasts decent mobility, high melee damage, and solid bulk. He excels in close-quarters combat, constantly pressuring enemies with Slash and Lunge while also disorienting and reaching them with Dolphin Slash. However, he is limited in ranged combat, relying solely on Blade Beam to chip away at enemies from afar. His passive, Spirit of the Sword, enables him to empower an ability for high bursts of damage, letting him make quick work of his foes. Sword can even perform large crowd control and area denial through his Phinisher, All-Mighty Axle Arc.

Spirit of the Sword

Damaging enemies or being damaged charges a meter. When charged, press R or touch the sword icon to power up your next ability.

Meter charge: +50% of damage taken
Max. meter: 100 points

  • Damage from empowered abilities do not contribute to the meter.
  • Empowered abilities do not have a cooldown, though using one will put the unpowered version on cooldown.
  • Reaching full meter will show a special particle effect on Sword.
  • The sound heard upon reaching full meter audible to other players.
  • Charge cannot be gained past full meter.
  • Using an empowered ability or dying resets the meter to 0.

Click to throw your sword which sticks onto anything it touches and explodes after pulsing 3 times. Instantly recharges your meter.

  • Damage from All-Mighty Axle Arc cannot generate Phinisher points.
  • Sword cannot use any abilities until his sword returns to him after exploding.
  • If Sword dies before the thrown sword hits an enemy or the environment, it will disappear.
  • Sword can also be damaged by the explosion.

  • Low skill floor makes Sword an excellent choice for new players.
  • Jack of all trades moveset. Sword is a versatile choice for team compositions to play around, and works well across many types of fights.
  • All-Mighty Axle Arc is the fastest charging Phinisher in the game.
  • Empowered Lunge is a powerful displacement option that can set up a fast, consistent 100+ damage combo.
Cons
  • No self sustain options in Sword's moveset, making Sword reliant on healers, kill health regeneration, and shield regeneration, which can be difficult due to being a melee.
  • Reliant on Lunge for getting close to enemies.
  • Sword lacks specialization due to being a jack of all trades in the melee category.

General:

Development:

  • Sword's abilities and appearance are inspired by Marth and Ike from the Fire Emblem franchise.
    • In particular, his Q ability, Dolphin Slash is a reference to the same move used by Marth in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
    • Additionally, his Phinisher line is a direct reference to one of Ike's taunts in the Super Smash Bros. series.
  • Sword was the first Phighter to be developed, created alongside the core gameplay systems used in PHIGHTING!, which took one month to complete.
  • Moon Animator was used to animate the cape rather than Blender as Roblox Studio had issues importing it.[1]
