Overview

Hyperlaser is a ranged Phighter that specializes in dealing high damage at long ranges. His Hyper Ray and Pierce Ray can put out consistent damage across the map. Hyperlaser has limited mobility to access, making him slow to take positions on the map or to escape from faster Phighters. His phinisher, Eviscerating Ray can fire up to 3 instant-kill shots if Hyperlaser lands the shots consecutively.

Details:

  • The sound before Hyperlaser fires Eviscerating Ray can be heard by all players regardless of distance.
  • Eviscerating Ray is not able to pierce enemies or Protecting Overtone. The hitbox is large enough to kill multiple people in one shot.
    • Shooting a Boombox's Protecting Overtone instantly destroys it and grants Hyperlaser another shot.
    • Shooting a Vine Staff sprout pierces, instantly destroys it, and grants Hyperlaser another shot.
  • Hyperlaser cannot gain phinisher points until the phinisher's effects end.

Hyperlaser is a ranged Phighter who specializes in dealing high DPS from mid to long-range distances. Left unchecked, a Hyperlaser can get constant kills and keep the hitpoints of the enemy team low. He also has a very high HP/Shield split allowing him to take many blows without dying. Due to this, however, he has very limited movement, with only his Voltaic Grenade that can be used to run while being attacked.

Although Hyperlaser isn't meant to be played close range, he has the tools to do so. His Voltaic Shift can be used to gain haste and to get the instant shot and his Voltaic Grenade gives him just enough time to hit one shot while the enemy is wireframed. His frontline is very limited alone as he is too slow to maintain his hp while dealing consistent damage, so a Hyperlaser should only be frontline if his team has established a strong enough frontline to support him. You should only be playing close range in certain circumstances, such as:

  • On Conquer, going on point to help your team contest it
  • To mix up his playstyle
  • To aid in the frontline, assuming a well-established frontline exists
  • As a last resort against melee Phighters

Hyperlaser's role is to deal major damage on key Phighters (such as a Sword or a support) preventing them from getting the value they would otherwise get. Hyperlaser's Phinisher, Eviscerating Ray, creates a major threat to the enemy team. It allows for the Hyperlaser to instantly kill 3 enemies if he hits all his shots. They must play around cover or attack the Hyperlaser directly to prevent him from getting too much value out of his Phinisher. If he is stunned or wireframed during the startup, the shot won't go out, however, it will not use up the shot either. A Hyperlaser has to be wary of other Phighter's while using his Phinisher as many abilities can disorient him, likely causing him to miss (Such as Sword's Dolphin Slash and Subspace's Fallen Star) While being very useful, it costs 150 Phinisher points to cast, and on average he only gets it 2-3 times per match.

For teammates playing with a Hyperlaser, having a strong frontline or distraction can secure Hyperlaser's backline position from being threatened by certain ranged and melee Phighters. This will enable him to focus on outputting damage without issue. Boombox and Sword can deter the enemy's frontline from advancing to Hyperlaser's position thanks to their bulk, while Skateboard can disorient the enemy's backline and force them to divert their attention towards him. Hyperlaser can also combo his Phinisher with other Phighters. Skateboard's Phinisher allows for one free shot on an enemy. Subspace's Fallen Star keeps enemies in the air and immobile allowing the Hyperlaser to get an easy shot off, however, Fallen Star can be to the Hyperlaser's detriment if used too late. Subspace's Phinisher also allows for a free shot if anyone is trapped inside.

Hyperlaser is effective on open maps, such as Protect Telamon, and Banland. Annihilate is an exceptional game mode for Hyperlaser, as it allows him to pick off enemies who are alone very easily.

All-in-all, Hyperlaser's high DPS and great Phinisher can make him a very strong Phighter in the right hands. His low mobility however makes him a very difficult Phighter for a new player to learn.

Ability usage

  • Locked and Loaded
    • Always try to aim for headshots. Dealing double damage with Hyper Ray drastically increases your overall damage, even if you miss a little more.
  • Hyper Ray
    • Utilize the wireframing ability remove the enemy's ability to attack for a short period of time. This is useful against targets with little mobility such as Katana, Medkit, and Vinestaff.
    • When playing mid-close range, instead of using wireframe, reloading after 1-2 shots will ensure you are on the move while dealing good damage. Rely on headshots, rather than consistent damage output.
  • Piercing Ray
    • Combining Piercing Ray and Hyper Ray can allow for a massive burst of damage to secure kills.
    • Furthermore, utilizing Piercing Ray, then Voltaic Shift’s instant shot will net a high damage combo.
  • Voltaic Grenade
    • If an enemy gets close, use Voltaic Grenade to apply Wireframe to them and utilize the haste buff to maintain your distance.
    • The cooldown for Voltaic Grenade is not very long, which allows for aggressive plays.
    • Throwing Voltaic Grenade to nearby teammates increases their speed, which is useful on a group of people.
    • At the start of a match, throwing the grenade will allow your team to reach highly contested areas on a map faster, giving your team the advantage. This also works when you are dead and are going back to contested areas.
    • Use Voltaic Shift to get the point on Conquer quickly.
      • Don't use it too early, as the enemy team will likely target you.
      • Saving Voltaic Shift instead of using it to reach conquer point fast is also a good idea, as the cooldown is very long and Voltaic Grenade speeds you up as well.
    • Another option is to teleport to high ground on maps like Protect Telamon, SFOTH, Nuke The Whales, The Iron Cafe etc.
      • This offers some protection at the cost of not being with your team.
    • If playing aggressive, utilizing the cancellable speed boost is a viable option for fighting against any threat for distancing youself and dealing damage.
      • This can be a risky play due to the fact that you have to get hit.
    • Use E as a flanking tool. Especially useful with Eviscerating Ray to catch enemies off guard
  • Eviscerating Ray
    • Watch out for Phighters with their movement abilities off cooldown, or if they're near cover.
    • Prioritize other Phighters stuck in their Phinisher animation. Phighters such as Katana and Vine Staff are easy targets as they have no movement abilities to be able to escape Eviscerating Ray.
    • Aiming for high mobility targets like Rocket, Shuriken and Slingshot may be a good idea as a mix-up. Keep in mind that these Phighters have a get away option.
      • If aiming for a high mobilty target, suprising them is always the best choice.

Counterplay against Hyperlaser

The sound effect before Hyperlaser fires Eviscerating Ray is extremely loud and telegraphed. The player is advised to look for cover before he fires.

Rushdown Phighters such as Skateboard, Biograft, Sword and Shuriken can easily close into Hyperlaser's position and exploit his inability to fight at close quarters. Utilize cover or approach Hyperlaser while his attention is on another part of the map to to minimize damage while getting into close range.

Boombox's Forcefield can absorb multiple shots from Hyperlaser and block his ultimate. The player should be aware that Piercing Ray can still damage allies through the shield.
